FrenchFrench 20, 30 (5 credits each) This sequences of course work places an emphasis on all four skills - listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension, and writing. Note: French 30 course work meets the minimum requirements for university entrance. French 10-3Y, 20-3Y (5 credits each) This series of course work is designed for students who have never studied French before high school. Applications of the basic skills as well as new vocabulary and grammar concepts are explored. French 10-9Y, 20-9Y (5 credits each) These courses are designed for students who have successfully completed French 9-9Y in junior high school. Building on prior knowledge, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing will be enhanced. French 10-9Y, 20-9Y enriched (IB/AP) This is an advanced Grade 10 French program and is recommended for students with sufficient background in French and who are interested in entering in the IB program. French 31a (5 credits each) Prerequisite: 50% in French 30 or Grade 9 FIM students These courses are designed for students who have successfully completed French 9-9Y in junior high school. Building on prior knowledge, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing will be enhanced. French 31b (5 credits each) Prerequisite: 50% in French 31a This course continues to develop the communication skills of students through the study of a variety of literary forms. Note: French 31b fulfills the requirements of the final year of International Baccalaureate Program, Language B. French 31c (5 credits each) Prerequisite: 50% in French 31b This course represents the ultimate step in the high school F.S.L. program. Students will gain a more comprehensive appreciation of the subtleties of the language.
SpanishSpanish 10 (5 credits) Prerequisite: None The course aims at a basic command of spoken Spanish. Grammar, spelling, sentence structure and the system of the Spanish language are studied. The students will also gain an appreciation of the rich Spanish culture and of the people who speak the language. Spanish 20 (5 credits) Prerequisite: 50% in Spanish 10
Spanish 20 is a continuation of Spanish 10. It will involve a selected range of topics such as travel, music, the world of work, a study of various South American countries, clothing, weather, and family. Sophistication in grammar and vocabulary will be developed. The focus on interactive communication and culture will remain an integral part of the program.
Spanish 30 (5 credits) Prerequisite: 50% in Spanish 20 This is the advanced level of Spanish 10 and 20. It will involve a range of topics such as culture, geography, occupations, schooling, and history. More verb tenses will be added in addition to more grammar structure. The focus on reading in Spanish will intensify as well as the amount of communication in Spanish.
Punjabi
Punjabi Language and Culture 10 (5 credits) Prerequisite: None This introductory level course, intended for students with no previous experience in Punjabi, aims at providing basic Punjabi vocabulary to identify concrete people, places, and things; ask for and provide basic information, and respond to simple, predictable questions. For those students whose ethnic heritage is Punjabi, there is an opportunity to renew contact with Punjabi language and culture; and the opportunity to maintain and further develop literacy in their first language, which is not necessarily the majority language in the community. Punjabi Language and Culture 20 (5 credits) Prerequisite: 50% in Punjabi 10 or successful completion of Elementary or Junior High Punjabi
This course is a continuation of Punjabi 10. It will involve a range of knowledge and skills to describe people, places or things and series or sequences of events or actions. Students will be able to ask for and provide information on a range of familiar topics by the end of this course. Students will also discover how to record and share thoughts with others as well as expression of emotions and feelings. Punjabi Language and Culture 30 (5 credits) Prerequisite: 50% in Punjabi 20 This course is a continuation of Punjabi 20. Students focus on the understanding of definitions, comparisons, and inquire about and express agreement or disagreement. Students will be able to use Punjabi for fun and to interpret and express humour, and will have the skills to use the language creatively for personal enjoyment. Some focus on reading and writing the language will be extended. |
