An Alberta high school diploma requires 15 credits in Social Studies. These credits must be obtained by taking Social Studies 10-1, 20-1 and 30-1 or Social 10-2, 20-2 and 30-2. All students in Social Studies 30-1 and Social Studies 30-2 must write an Alberta Education Diploma exam.
A final mark of 60% in Grade 9 Social Studies is the recommended prerequisite to enter Social 10-1 and it is recommended that students maintain a 60% average or better to take Social Studies 20-1 and 30. In choosing social studies courses, students should check post-secondary requirements. Most academic students take the Social Studies 30 course.
The Social Studies 10-2, 20-2, 30-2 level has more focus on skill building and is designed for those students who would experience considerable difficulty in the advanced program. Students in this stream could still enter into Social 30-1 after finishing Social 30-2 and therefore graduate from the academic route. After completing the second Grade 12 level Social course, most students are successful on the diploma exam.
Social Studies 10-1, 20-1 & 30-1 (5 credits each)
These courses make up the regular academic program in Social Studies. The Social Studies 30-1 provincial diploma exam counts for fifty percent of the course mark. Students seeking entrance requirements for university, or for some other post-secondary institution, should consider this route. We suggest that students achieving marks under 60% consider the general program described below.
Social Studies 10-2, 20-2 & 30-2 (5 credits each)
This program is for students who are not seeking university entrance. A student in this program who wishes to complete the advanced program would transfer to Social Studies 30-1 after completing Social Studies 30-2.
